 Tour group Fall Meetinghouse Sisters' attic in Dwelling House
All tours are included in the price of admission. The Shaker Story Tour Guided Tour - Daily at 11am, 12pm, 1pm, 2pm, 3pm (75 minutes), 4pm (30 minutes). Starts at the Visitors Center.This tour has its roots in the Shaker community itself, as the Canterbury Sisters helped initiate and develop it. It introduces our visitors to the culture and 200 year history of the Shakers at Canterbury. The Shakers' worship, work, and education are discussed as guides take visitors through the historic Meeting House, Laundry, and School House. See artifacts and interiors that have made the Shakers world renowned. (30-minute tour at 3:00 guides visitors through the Meeting House.)
The Shaker Home Tour Guided Tour - Daily 10:30am, 11:30am, 12:30pm, 1:30pm, 2:30pm, 3:30pm. Starts at the Chapel. 1 hour. The Dwelling House is where the Canterbury Shakers slept, dined, and cooked. The building dates from 1793 and was in use by the Shakers until 1992. Its design and function provide insight into the communal and individual lives of the Shakers. See artifacts, construction details and interiors that have made the Shakers world renowned. The Shaker Home Tour lasts one hour, runs several times a day, and covers the basement (food & dining areas) through the attic floors of the Dwelling House.
The Shaker Landscapes Hayride (additional $3.00 fee, children 5 and under free). Limited seating, weather permitting.) Wednesday & Thursdays - 1:30pm (now through 10/17/09); Fridays, Saturdays & Sundays - 1:30pm & 2:30pm (now through 10/25/09). Starts at the Syrup Shop. 1 hour. This one-hour tour of the village grounds engages the visitor with a broader look at the incredible scenery of the Shakers' "Heaven on Earth" in Canterbury. Along the way, we will make brief stops to view the orchard, vegetable gardens, mill ponds, and botanic garden. This journey through fields, ponds, and woodlands will give you a unique perspective of the village landscape, all from the comfort of our hay wagon.
The Shaker Historic Gardens & Grounds Tour Fridays, Saturdays, & Sundays 11:15pm (now through 10/12/09). Starts at the Bee House. 45 minutes.A walking tour of the village grounds with an overview of the Shakers' relationship to their landscape. Learn about the Shaker gardens, their seed and herb business, and other agricultural endeavors as you walk among the historic and contemporary landscape of the Village.
