The Pump Mill, 1905

This pumping station is located alongside Factory Mill Pond. It was built on the site of an earlier clothiers or weaving mill. The function of this stone structure was to pump water to brick-lined cisterns in the North Orchard. From there, the water travelled south to the Church Family and the cow barn complex. The building's original cast iron waterwheel was replaced with a wood (chestnut) one because of problems with rusting. The last wheel used in the building was removed in the early 1950s, and the building was unused and settled into disrepair. In 1996, the pump mill was restored and the building renovated.
Today the Pump House is open for viewing.
