Challenge Gift Boosts Annual Fund Campaign at Canterbury Shaker Village
Jon and Constance Old have pledged a $25,000 challenge gift to Canterbury Shaker Village’s Annual Fund Campaign, matching donations dollar for dollar up to $25,000 through December 31, 2024, to inspire holiday giving. The campaign goal is to raise $400,000 for the Village’s fiscal year ending March 31, 2025.
Expressing “sincere thanks” to Jon and Constance Old, Board Trustee Bruce Stefany referred to the Annual Fund as “the heartbeat of the Village.” “It covers essential day-to-day operating expenses, including salaries, utilities, and building maintenance,” he said.
In addition to raising funds, the annual fund (and friend) raising effort highlights the continued relevance of the Village’s mission. Founded in 1969, the Village interprets 200 years of Shaker life through exhibits, buildings, gardens, programs, and tours.
“The Shakers believed in communal ownership, pacifism, dancing in worship, equality of the sexes, celibacy, and living simply,” remarked Stefany. “Sharing these ideals and values is central to our mission.”
